Bopup Communication Server version 5.0 is available

We are proud to present a major version 5.0 of Bopup Communication Server software. The new release introduces great modern interface of Management Console that includes fully re-designed HTML views, flat icons and other images. We believe that version 5.0 of the communication server will be liked by our existing customers because it represents a new era of Bopup IM software platform.

A brief overview of the new interface changes

New modern design of the Management Console interface
We changed a lot of belonging the user's GUI in the new version of the console. Now the views to display user accounts, groups, news, file distirbution tasks look different. But same information can be read and accessed easily because some displayed details have been compacted.

How the few from new views look now
Dashboard view (former Welcome screen)
User account profile page
File Distribution task profile
IM Client Configuration Tool
We renamed a well-known Setup.ini Configuration Tool that manages instant messenger settings from the server console.

IM Client Configuration Tool (former Setup.ini Configuration Tool)

That's because the Setup.ini file can be used on initial deployment of the software (to set the name of the IM server, for example) but in most of other cases the tool is used directly from Management Console to change and distribute new options to users with no handling the setup.ini file itself.

Added a check of Organization Unit permissions on moving user accounts
The new version now checks both previous and new OUs' permissions on moving users between then and if the permissions match then users' Contact Lists are not reset and keep unchanged.

Improved Active Directory Import Wizard
The interface of the Import Wizard added a log window that shows a process of the import procedure. That's the same log that can be accessed at any time from Tools menu.

A lot of minor and other important fixes and improvements
There are a huge number of small bug fixes and enhancements that the new version 5.0 of the communication server added. In overall the new release has become more stable and faster.

Contact List permissions has been improved

New versions both of the IM server and messenger software are available for download. Version 4.3.18 of Bopup Communication Server improved messaging and permissions functionality, see the list of changes below:

Added new option that restricts IM other contacts that are not included to user's Contact List

New setting called "Prevent messaging with users that are not from contacts" added to Contact List tab of user's properties dialog in the console.

This option becomes available only if the contacts are locked on the server. Using this option will disable sending replies to contacts when they appear under Not In Contacts list even those users are located in visible/accessible Organizational Unit.

Added new setting that checks OU permission on delivery of private messages between users

The Messaging tab of the Options dialog box in the console added new checkbox called "Check OU permissions on delivering every personal message"

Recent versions of the communication server checked those permissions each time but it could make instant messaging slower in most of times. So now this option is available as a stand-alone and turned off by default.

Improved Active Directory Import Wizard

The server console added some improvements to import wizard. Now it does not stop/start the service that forced a disconnect of all users if the wizard has been executed in Update or Synchronize modes. Restart of the service occurs now only if the wizard went out from Create new mode.

Please note that it is required to update the messenger application to version 6.5.7 in order to support new option that prevents sending messaging to non-contacts users.

Useful update of the communication server software

We released Bopup Communication Server version 4.3.11 that comes with useful improvements and updates. It also solves the issue explained in the recent post when Android app is unable to connect if Windows Authentication is used for the user account. See detailed information on changes in this version below.

What's new:

Added function to set a password for a user manually if Private login/password authentication is used
The server console added an option to set a password for the account if third-party authentication is used. That's too useful addition because our customers asked about this function for a long time. So now it is possible to change password for the account manually through account properties window and not only to reset it in order to force the user to create a new one by himself.

Added ability to use same IM account name on Android messenger app even if Windows Authentication is enabled
Another important change is about support of the messenger application for Android platform. Prior versions of the IM server required to have different accounts for the same user if the software works on Windows domain network. Or change the authentication for that user to Private login/password mode. The latest version of the server now supports using the same IM account on different devices, and use Windows Authentication on desktop messenger and Private login/password for Android app.

Fixed issues with checking new updates
We were reported that the console did not check for updates correctly and even brought a connection error message. That forced us to discover several issues and one was in our website since May 2014! Now everything works as it should and properly.

Known issue: Android app does not support Windows Authentication

Here is an issue with authentication used by our IM client for mobile platform called Bopup Messenger for Android. It does not support Windows Authentication so the application cannot accept domain name, account and password to connect to communication server and brings an SSPI authorization error. The problem is in SSPI mechanism used by our IM server and which is not supported by Android platform because it's implementation is available for Windows system only. We will try to work out this issue in future versions of the software, stay updated.

Major security update for Bopup Communication Server

We released new version of the communication server 4.1.6 which fixes a security issue with creation of user accounts from instant messaging clients. User were able to create any IM accounts and connect to the server even it's option restrict that. This issues appears only if Active Directory (LDAP) integration feature is enabled on the server.

This fix has a high-priority level so we advise our customers to update their existing software as soon as possible.

New versions of the IM client software are also available, and Bopup Messenger 6.1.5 and Bopup Observer 5.1.5 are ready for download. These updates add a support for new hidden option named "DisableRememberMeOption" that can be now found in setup.ini settings file and Setup.ini Configuration Tool. It lets disable "Remember me on this computer" checkbox on the "Log in" tab in the messengers if the client software is used on shared or public computers, for example.

Fixed saving Active Directory (LDAP) Integration settings on the IM server

Today new version of Bopup Communication Server has been released. Version 4.0.12 comes with built-in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express that was added in previous version of the server and also fixes problem with saving settings in the "Active Directory (LDAP) Intergation" dialog available in the Tools menu of the Management Console.

The problem with saving LDAP integration settings comes from version 4.0.0 of the communication server in which we moved that options from the Options dialog to a separate window. Starting from that version the Active Directory integration could not even turned on (by default it is off) so it was impossible to search, import and create user accounts "on-the-fly" from the LDAP catalog.

For more information about this feature please refer to online documentation of Bopup Communication Server available at http://www.bopup.com/onlinehelp/server/tools/active_directory_ldap_integration.html
