Critical update of the messenger application

New version 6.6.2 of Bopup Messenger client available that fixes a critical bug in GUI. This is an important update of the messenger application and it is required for all releases starting from version 6.6. The problem occurs when the main window of the IM client removes "Contacts" tab if Simple or Windows Authentication is used to connect to the communication server. That causes some interface bugs and does not show "Sign in" tab if a user manually disconnects.

IM Server fixes autorization of Android clients if Windows Authentication is enabled

We released a priority update for the communication server that fixed problem with accepting the Android clients if Windows Authentication is enabled for user accounts. It seems that the IM server had a bug that did not allow to connect from Android devices under the same account name used by a user in desktop messenger. We strongly recommend to update an existing server software to version 4.3.17 to avoid this issue.

IM server fixed setting up a private password for user accounts

We updated Bopup Communication Server software and released version 4.3.15. This is a minor update of the IM server but it fixes the issue with setting password for an account in Private login/password authentication mode. It worked properly when a password set during account creation but not from subsequent editing users.

Log out function is available in IM clients even Simple or Windows Authentication are used

Both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer messaging clients improved "Log out..." function that is accessible from Messages menu. Now that item is available always when a messenger is connected and even Simple or Windows Authentication modes are used. Previously this menu option was available only if Private login/password authentication used.

Now it is possible to disconnect from the IM server without closing the messenger application. This will allow to change login name and enter to IM network with another credentials.

Another important change is that the messaging clients will bring and show "Login" pane in the main window every time when the same user has entered to the IM network from another computer/device and when only a single connection per each account is permitted. Now the pane will be shown not only if Private login/password used but also under Simple and Windows Authentication.

Bopup Communication Server added bulk edit of user accounts

New version 4.3.14 of Bopup Communication Server has been recently released and it now supports modifying multiple user accounts simultaneously. It is possible to select several users accounts under Organizational Unit lists or in Find Users view then click Edit button on the toolbar or right-click and choose "Edit..." from the popup menu. Bulk edit of user accounts allow to change all fields except users' Organizational Unit and Contact Lists.

Another change in the console is regarding Password tab shown in the user's properties dialog box which has been removed. Functions to set and reset password are now available on the Authentication tab and activated if Private login/password mode is chosen.

Management Console also added new field called "Contact List status" in Organizational Units and Find Users lists that shows a locked status of user's contacts if that option is used. User's profile page also added a display of this value.

Useful update of the communication server software

We released Bopup Communication Server version 4.3.11 that comes with useful improvements and updates. It also solves the issue explained in the recent post when Android app is unable to connect if Windows Authentication is used for the user account. See detailed information on changes in this version below.

What's new:

Added function to set a password for a user manually if Private login/password authentication is used
The server console added an option to set a password for the account if third-party authentication is used. That's too useful addition because our customers asked about this function for a long time. So now it is possible to change password for the account manually through account properties window and not only to reset it in order to force the user to create a new one by himself.

Added ability to use same IM account name on Android messenger app even if Windows Authentication is enabled
Another important change is about support of the messenger application for Android platform. Prior versions of the IM server required to have different accounts for the same user if the software works on Windows domain network. Or change the authentication for that user to Private login/password mode. The latest version of the server now supports using the same IM account on different devices, and use Windows Authentication on desktop messenger and Private login/password for Android app.

Fixed issues with checking new updates
We were reported that the console did not check for updates correctly and even brought a connection error message. That forced us to discover several issues and one was in our website since May 2014! Now everything works as it should and properly.

Known issue: Android app does not support Windows Authentication

Here is an issue with authentication used by our IM client for mobile platform called Bopup Messenger for Android. It does not support Windows Authentication so the application cannot accept domain name, account and password to connect to communication server and brings an SSPI authorization error. The problem is in SSPI mechanism used by our IM server and which is not supported by Android platform because it's implementation is available for Windows system only. We will try to work out this issue in future versions of the software, stay updated.

Tips & Tricks: How to override current user account to use it in the messenger

We already described in the past a similar situation and advised to use Private login and password as a personal  authentication for a user if he needs to do not use his current logon name in Windows. Read that article at Tips & Tricks: How to get users connected under different IM accounts if they have the same Windows logon name

That solution works fine but sometimes it is required to keep existing authentication and just override user account name. For example, a user can be renamed in Windows but the system is continued using his old logon name everywhere except Welcome screen. And there is no bug because user account must be migrated but not renamed if we want to use a new logon name in Windows and installed applications. There are also many useful and helpful articles on the net that explain that Existing user account names: Don't rename them, migrate them. But anyway, if we only renamed the user how to force the messenger to use his new logon name? That's possible!

Starting from earlier versions both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer support a hidden option in system registry that allows to overwrite current user account that would be used by the IM client. The setting named "OverwrittenAccount" and must be created in application's root under HKCU key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\B Labs\Bopup Messenger]

where "desired-im-account" is the new user name that would override his current name in Windows. This solution works perfectly if Simple authentication is enabled on the communication server and using it a user will be able to continue connect to the IM server smoothly and fast like he logged prior renaming the account.

You can also download the registry file from our website, modify and apply it on users' computers

Bopup IM clients added useful improvements when third-party authentication is used

We glad to inform our customers that new updates of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients were released. New versions added great improvements if the messengers connected to the communication server using third-party authentication, i.e. by entering custom logon name and password.

Now it is possible to control "Remember me on this computer" option and also to close established session with the IM server and log out from the main menu in the messenger by showing "Login" page.

Another great addition is displaying current account name in a title of main window if third-party authorization is used.
