Known issue: The service returns error #1053 on start attempt

There is a possible issue with starting the service module of Bopup Communication Server that can bring error #1053 and fail to start. This issue usually occurs after installing latest Windows updates upgrading OS to recent Windows 10 or Windows 2012. In most cases the service must be re-registered in the system again that fix the problem. The information below contains steps on how to do this.

1. Access the instalation folder from a command line interface. Open Command prompt (CMD command in Start menu) under Administrative rights and navigate into installation folder of the IM server. By default the service is installed to \Program Files (x86)\Bopup Communication Server. So the command must be the following:

cd \Program Files (x86)\Bopup Communication Server

2. Unregister the service module by executing the following command:

bcssrvc /unregserver

Then ensure that Bopup Communication Server has dissappeared from Services list in Windows.

3. Register the service again by using the following command:

bcssrvc /service

Check that the Bopup Communication Server has been added to the Services list.

4. Close the command prompt window, launch the Management Console of the communication server and start the service.

Tips & Tricks: How to fix issue if Bopup Communication Server is not started

From time to time we are reported by our customers and users that the IM service of Bopup Communication Server stopped to working. It is shown as Stopped in Management Console and cannot be started no more. At the same time the console launches normally and shows no errors on startup. Commonly a reason of this issue is simple and can be fixed quickly. See the possible resolutions below.

Trial peroid or software license has been expired

The most common reason is that 45-day trial of evaluation period of the communication server expired. If the IM server is registered version check information about the license from Help->About dialog box. It shows details on the license including the number of supported IM clients and also an expiration date. In case of expired trial the 45-day trial expired caption will be shown. Same information is shown on the right top corner of Welcome page in Management Console.

Check that the IM service is still registered in Windows services

Another problem that could suddenly occur is missing of core service of Bopup Communication Server from Services list in Windows system. Open services panel in Windows from Control Panel->Administrative tools->Services. It is also possible to open that panel directly from the console by clicking "Open Services lists" link on Welcome screen. Check that Bopup Communication Server service is shown in the list and having Automatic startup type.

If there is no such service in the list that means that it cannot be started and the server will not be operated correctly including accept connections from instant messengers. It must be registed in Windows system by the following way:

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to installation folder of the IM server. By default the communication server is installed to "\Program Files\Bopup Communication Server". On 64-bit versions of Windows default directory is "\Program Files (x86)\Bopup Communication Server".
2. Click Start button on Task bar in Windows and then type "run" in search box. Thex select Run to show a launch dialog box.
3. Select "bcssrvc.exe" file in previously opened Windows Explorer window and drag-n-drop it to Run dialog. A full path to the file will be shown in command line.
4. Type /service parameter in the end of the path to the service module so a full command line has been changed to

"[PATH]\bcssrvc.exe" /service

5. Click OK to launch the command. Then refresh Services list and try to start the service.

Find out what happens with the service when it brings errors

If the communication service is not started due to some troubles with SQL database server, for example, then it is possible to discover that. Open Event Log viewer in Windows from Control Panel->Administrative tools->Event viewer or click "Open Event viewer" link in Management Console to open same window. Then click Windows logs on the left to expand it and select Applications. Scroll-down to find last messages from top sent by Bopup Communication Server service.

Normally only Start and Stop events must be present, it is events #100 and #101 respectively. If there are any other warnings or errors then copy event description and send that report to Support Team or via Live Chat function on bopup.com website or directly from the console.

Known issue: An attempt to create a backup file gives SQL error #5

Many our users faced with an error on creation of a backup file from SQL database maintenance... dialog in Management Console. Once destination folder has been selected the console brings "Cannot open backup device. Operating System error 5" and no backup file is created.

This is a known issue of the IM server application but it does not relate to any error. Since backup files are created by Microsoft SQL Server directly then an account under which database service is running may not have appropriate write permission to chosen folder. Usually this error can occur when a target directory that has been chosen to save a backup file is located in current user's profile folder such as "My Documents", "Desktop", etc. In case of the error try to choose another location to create and save backup file.

We also updated and appended with this information our FAQ section available on the website that contains details on how to Create and restore backups of Bopup Communication Server.

Known issue: Receiving files fails if destination folder contains data with the same name

We need to inform our users that both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients have an issue with receiving files. Reception of files brings an error on decompression step if destination folder already contains files/directories with the same name. We will fix this problem in the nearest versions of the messaging clients. At this moment we advise to use settings in the IM clients that allow to create new subfolders in destination folder that include sender's name and/or current date.

Tips & Tricks: How to avoid a crash of Management Console in Windows 8

We discovered and were reported by our customers that Management Console of Bopup Communication Server may crash on switching between it's views. This is annoying and known issue which we are currently working on. But it is possible to avoid that problem with ease.

If you experience same issue with the console in Windows 8 or 2012 then you have to modify shortcut for the console launch and set compatibility for Windows 7. Right-click on a shortcut then click Properties from a context menu. Switch to Compatibility tab in the properties dialog and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" option and select Windows 7 from the drop-down box. Click OK to close the window and apply the changes. Then start the console again.

Tips & Tricks: How to prevent users from uninstallation of IM clients?

Sometimes security policies of a company require to prevent users rights to uninstall instant messenger software from their local PC. Our software already offers an option that prevents users from existing the IM client application. That can be done via "RestrictExitProgram=1" setting in the Setup.ini configuration file and Setup.ini Configuration Tool. Both of them are available for download at www.bopup.com But there is no option to disable uninstallation of the application from Programs and Features panel (Add/Remove Programs (ARP) in earlier Windows versions). But that's possible too.

Since setup packages of Bopup IM client software are provided in MSI files then it is possible to use command line options for msiexec launcher by putting standard Windows Installer properties. In order to disable Remove option in the Control Panel "ARPNOREMOVE=1" (in upper case) must be used. Thus the command line that launches the setup package and installs it with no disabled remove option in ARP should be the following:

msiexec /i bopupmes.msi ARPNOREMOVE=1

Bopup Observer client observer.msi package name must be specified instead of bopupmes.msi

There are so many options, and it is even possible to set IM server name by putting "IMSERVER=" property (in upper-case letters) to set a name/address of Bopup Communication Server.

Yes, there is a little problem to use the command line options if the IM client applications are deployed/upgraded via Active Directory Group Policies (GPO). So we plan to add a new option to the setup.ini configuration file to support uninstallation through it.

"User is typing message..." event is now supported!

We glad to inform our customers that new versions of Bopup IM suite are now available for download. Both the come with major versions because we did a lot of work, added useful improvements and fixed many issues. See what is new below.

User typing event
Firstly we need to say about very useful function. Maybe it is known from public messenger when users can see in their conversations that another one is currently typing a message or reply. Year, this adds interactivity interactivity and improves usability. When we see that the reply is being typed we do not close chat window immediately. And now our software provides that support too!

Download and update both the server and client parts in order to be able to use this function. The "User is typing message..." event appears every time in a conversation dialog of Bopup Messenger client. Delivery of this instant notification event is controlled on Bopup Communication Server and you can disable it from the Options dialog box by switching to Messaging tab.

Displaying a huge amount of messages on the server history
Management Console of the communication server fixes issues with showing a great number of messages and file transfers selected from a Message History. That issue also related to displaying some profile pages for account, group and/or news messages. Now data is displayed quickly and with no error even you select thousands records.

Fixed installation of the IM server with built-in SQL Server
Another important issue was installation of Bopup Communication Server with it's built-in database server on latest versions of Windows. Sometimes the setup fails to complete because no connection to the SQL Server could be established. That was a security problem because Windows requires a stronger password for built-in 'sa' account for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express that shipped with the IM server package. We did that.

Forget about duplicate versions of the messenger software in Add/Remove Programs panel
Our customers that distribute and deploy new updates of the IM client using the communication server faced with the problem that previous version of the software might not be properly removed from Add/Remove Programs if the update was initiated under non-administrator user account in Windows. That was too old problem that we know about. Now the messenger software removes it's previous version during an upgrade with keeping all settings and message history.

Adding File Transfers to a messenger local history
Both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients fix error with adding and saving received and sent transfers to Message History. Now al file transfers are properly archived for a future review.

Major security update for Bopup Communication Server

We released new version of the communication server 4.1.6 which fixes a security issue with creation of user accounts from instant messaging clients. User were able to create any IM accounts and connect to the server even it's option restrict that. This issues appears only if Active Directory (LDAP) integration feature is enabled on the server.

This fix has a high-priority level so we advise our customers to update their existing software as soon as possible.

New versions of the IM client software are also available, and Bopup Messenger 6.1.5 and Bopup Observer 5.1.5 are ready for download. These updates add a support for new hidden option named "DisableRememberMeOption" that can be now found in setup.ini settings file and Setup.ini Configuration Tool. It lets disable "Remember me on this computer" checkbox on the "Log in" tab in the messengers if the client software is used on shared or public computers, for example.

Bopup IM Live Chat is changed but working again

We were experiencing troubles with our Live Chat function on the website in the past few months because the messenger form stopped working in the middle of August 2012. That was very annoying issue and problem for us and our customers. Since our Live Chat feature was based on Windows Live Messenger platform we tried to find some references on Microsoft's website and support forums. But nothing and no one helped us.

We also noticed that a lot of Windows Live platform has been changed in the past months, like live.com, outlook.com websites, and thought all the time that the issue we are having with the Live Chat form is a temporary problem. But we were in wrong...

Confirmed: Microsoft To Kill Windows Live Messenger in 2013
Microsoft has officially confirmed that the company will discontinue Windows Live Messenger in 2013, moving all users over to Skype in Q1. This move will include migrating Messenger’s 100 million users to Skype’s platform.

That's the reason why we were having troubles with our Live Chat website form all the past time — Microsoft is slowly killing services related to Windows Live Messenger platform.

Today we migrated and started to use a new Live Chat feature, it looks simply and works like the form from Microsoft. Thus our Live Chat function has been restored and now available on our websites again. Welcome!

Our Live Chat support is now working again

The Live Chat messenger stopped working about 1 month ago due to Microsoft's platform issues and we were not able to response to inquiries and questions via website messenger form. Anyway now it is working again that gives another way to reach us more quicker and faster.

New update of Bopup Communication Server is available

Bopup Communication Server version 4.0.14 is now available for download at http://www.bopup.com/downloads/ This is a minor update of the software but it comes with some great improvements.

What's new:

Added option to protect with password a launch of local Management Console

As you know you can manage your communication server remotely from another computer. It is possible just enable appropriate option and protect the sever with a secure password that must be entered during installation of remote Management Console and it's connection to the running instance of the IM server. But now a local installation of the console can be also protected. This version adds a new setting in the Interface tab called "Password protect launch of local Management Console" that asks for the password each time when you run your local Management Console. It is useful if the server computer is shared with users and they can work on it directly or via Terminal Services.

The new option is available only if remote management of the IM server is currently enabled.

Added ability to edit built-in and non-removable @BUILTIN_SENDER account on the IM server

This version of the communication server bring the built-in @BUILTIN_SENDER user account visible for editing in Management Console. This account is used by the server to send News messages and private messages to users and groups from the console. Some users asked us to change it's name because there was no option to change the account details or account name. Now this account is available in the console and you are able to add first and last names, edit it's descriptions, etc. Please note that the account cannot be deleted, disabled, renamed or moved to another Organizational Unit from the "_Default". The main idea was to make the sender name more friendly when it is showing in the messenger clients.

Fixed error in the Setup Wizard that occurs when only the Management Console is installed on Windows 64-bit systems

Version 4.0.14 of Bopup Communication Server also fixes setup error if only the Management Console is installed for remote control of an existing communication server. The error occurred only on Windows x64 platforms on the page of the Setup Wizard that asks the server address and password for connection.

Live Chat is temporary unavailable

We have discovered that Live Chat application on our website at www.bopup.com is unavailable in the past few hours. We think that this is a Microsoft issue because Live Chat function is based on Windows Live Messenger service. We cannot say when it will start working again, and our apologizes for this problem.

Please notice that only website messenger form is temporary not working. Our toll free US/Canada phone within support and sales e-mails work as well.

Bopup Communication Server is now shipped with MS SQL Server 2005 Express

We have good news regarding our communication server product. Now it's full setup package comes with built-in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express for both 32- and 64-bit Windows systems. The new SQL Server replaced MSDE 2000 software which was included to all previous versions of Bopup Communication Server.

What are benefits of using the new SQL Server software? We agree that size of the new setup package becomes bigger. But the main benefit is that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express is supported and can be installed on latest versions of Windows, i.e. Vista, 7 and later. This was the primary issue with the built-in MSDE 2000 software because it is not supported starting from Windows Vista.

Now there are no needs to learn our online guide and to manually install Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008/2012 Express editions as a host SQL Server for the communication server software. The new setup package solves all these issues and Bopup Communication Server can be easily installed with the built-in SQL Server on all major Windows systems starting from Windows 2000.

Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer fix issues with a Sleep Mode in Windows

New versions of the instant messaging client software have been released. Bopup Messenger version 6.0.4 and Bopup Observer version 5.0.4 fix issues that are related to a Sleep (Suspend) Mode in Windows system. We were notified that if the conversation dialogs are left open on the desktop and the PC goes to suspend mode then the dialogs become blank and and contain no previous conversation when the computer resumes. This problem occurs only if the "Show only online users" option is enabled in the messenger which hides users in Contact List that are not on the IM network.

The new versions improve and now support a sleep/suspend mode in Windows. If the computer goes to a sleep then the messengers automatically disconnect from the communication server and do not try to re-connect again while the computer/laptop sleeps. Connection with the IM server is established only when Windows resumes and network connections are ready.

The server install is going back from MSI to EXE package

Today we released a new version of Bopup Communication Server that brings small improvements and changes. Version 4.0.8 is also distributed via EXE setup package files. We decided to move installation files from MSI extension to executable setups because it is easier to launch an EXE file with "Run as administrator" option on Windows Vista and later systems. Unfortunately Windows Explorer does not show that option in context menu if you right-click on a MSI file.

Since we received a lot of reports regarding installation issues of Bopup Communication Server on latest versions of Windows including 64-bit versions then we improved the setup and added additional verification of user's privileges (UAC). If the setup is running without required rights (full administrative privileges) then it shows appropriate error page.

It is strongly required to launch the setup package of the IM server with administrator privileges in order to properly install and register all modules and services in the system. It is easy to do that: right-click on the setup file and select "Run as administrator" option from context menu.

Known issue: The communication service is not registered on 64-bit version of Windows

We were reported by our customers about installation issues of Bopup Communication Server software on 64-bit versions of Windows system. It seems the Setup Wizard cannot add and register the communication service module which is a part of the IM server software. That service accepts all incoming connections from instant messengers so if it is not running that causes a big trouble for all communications: IM is not possible!

We discovered that this may be an issue with current user's credentials in Windows system. In order to sure that the setup has appropriate rights to install and register the communication service you have to run the installation package with administrative rights. It is easy to do, just right-click on the setup file and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.

But here is another issue: Windows Exporer does not show such menu option for MSI setup files, this is only available for EXE, BAT and other extensions of files. So you need to download this batch file and put it into the folder with the MSI setup package of Bopup Communication Server. Then right-click on the batch file and select "Run as administrator" menu and confirm selection.

You can also launch the setup without having to download the batch file above. Go to Start menu and type cmd and do not press Enter button. The cmd.exe should appear on the top of the menu. Right-click on it and select "Run as administrator". This will run the command prompt with administrative rights. Then navigate to folder with the MSI package. Type msiexec /i to run the installation.

Please note that this instruction is required only for 64-bit systems of Windows. If you have 32-bit version then you can run the Setup Wizard in a regular mode.

New version of the communication server improves and fixes security issues

In the latest days of the past 2011 year we released new version 4.0.4 of Bopup Communication Server. The new version adds an useful function which also closes an important security issue. That function is a password that can be set up on the communication server to allow or permit a remote administration of the IM server.

Prior versions of the communication server did no have any security functions and the Management Console could be installed on any computer in the Administrative Mode to manage and control an existing instance of Bopup Communication Server.

In order to enable the password proptection open the Options dialog box in the console and go to the "Interface" tab.

Click the "Allow remote management of this instance of the communication server" check box if you want to permit remote management of your IM server. Then enter a password that should entered in the remote console and in the Setup Wizard to protect your communication server.

Now the Setup Wizard asks for security password if the Management Console is installed in the Administrative mode to manage an existing installation of the communication server. That password must be entered on the page which asks for the name/address of the IM server.

The same password is asked when the remote Management Console starts. You can save the password by checking the "Remember this password on the next startup" option.

Please note that communication service on the server computer must be started during installation/startup of the console on remote computer.

Tips & Tricks: How to connect to the communication server outside Windows Domain network?

Sometimes users ask us about how they can connect to Bopup Communication Server from the , for example from a home computer, if Windows Authentication (SSPI) is used by default on the IM server. They are supposed to get the Login pane but the messenger client shows only "User account not found on the IM server" error message and no login and password fields are displayed in the IM client. There is a small trick to enable this:

Create new active and unused user account (with any name) on the communication server and set the Private login/password authentication for it

This will force the instant messenger to display the Login tab when the default authentication fails and allow the user to enter his domain account name in the "DOMAIN\User" format and his password to connect to Bopup Communication Server if first authentication using SSPI returns an error.

Known issue: Bopup Communication Server service disappears from Windows Services list

Sometimes due to unknown reasons Bopup Communication Server may disappear from Services List in Windows so the communication server stops working. In order to resolve this problem you have to register the service manually to get it visible and start from the Management Console again. Follow the step below to register the service file.

  1. Open installation directory of the communication server in Windows Explorer. By default that directory is located at \Program Files\Bopup Communication Server.
  2. Click Start menu and choose Run... option from there. This will open a command field.
Select bcssrvc.exe file (communication service) and drag-n-drop it from opened folder to the Run... text field.
  3. Type /service command line argument after full path of the inserted service file so the run string looks like as "PATH\bcssrvc.exe" /service.
  4. Press Enter to run the command and register the communicaton server in Windows system. Then open the Management Console and start the service.

Known issue: Silent upgrade of the IM clients requires administrative rights

A new issue has been discovered by us. It belongs to the UpgradeUI setting under the [INSTALL] section of the setup.ini configuration file that can be used on clear installations and/or upgrading existing versions of the .

The UpgradeUI option controls the user interface (UI) mode that should be displayed by the Setup Wizard of the IM client on upgrading an existing version via MSI setup package. This option can be used only if a new version of the messenger is distributed from the communication server.

The following values are accepted:
0 — Show dialogs of the Setup Wizard with automated processing of an upgrade.
1 — Display only progress indicator with no any dialogs.
2 — Silent mode with displaying no progress bar and dialogs.

So if the UpgradeUI=2 is used then the MSI setup package is launched with the /quiet command line parameter which requires administrative rights on a client computer! We advise our customers to do not use this value if they are not sure that the installation package of the instant messenger will be launched under a user with administrative rights on computer.
