New version of the messenger app for Windows PC

New version 6.9 of Bopup Messenger is available for download. This version adds new great feature that is going to be introduced in the next release of the IM server product, Bopup Communication Server. The new function will allow to rebrand the messenger title anywhere and place custom brand name instead of Bopup name.

The version 6.9 also comes with some minor bugfixes and improvements regarding AM/PM time format on displaing messages and file transfers in 12-hour clock.

Another improvement is that the application now ignores space symbols in IM server and account names entered during connection. That could cause annoying issues.

Log out function is available in IM clients even Simple or Windows Authentication are used

Both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer messaging clients improved "Log out..." function that is accessible from Messages menu. Now that item is available always when a messenger is connected and even Simple or Windows Authentication modes are used. Previously this menu option was available only if Private login/password authentication used.

Now it is possible to disconnect from the IM server without closing the messenger application. This will allow to change login name and enter to IM network with another credentials.

Another important change is that the messaging clients will bring and show "Login" pane in the main window every time when the same user has entered to the IM network from another computer/device and when only a single connection per each account is permitted. Now the pane will be shown not only if Private login/password used but also under Simple and Windows Authentication.

Major updates of the IM client applications

Great updates of the instant messenger software are available! We released Bopup Messenger version 6.4 and Bopup Observer 5.4 which come with a huge number of changes, bug fixes and improvements.

What's new:

Great changes applied to displaying conversations
Many improvements and additions occurred in formatting conversation dialogs. We changed colors both for sender's and recipient's titles that include name and time. Blue and red colors have been removed and we started to use neutral gray color to mark headers.

Now each single message in the conversation is separated with an empty string that allows to easily find a recent message among others.

In addition if offline or message to multiple users is sent then that notification text is shown using small font with italic style applied. When offline message is received then appropriate notification is appended to the end of the message in the similar format instead of beginning of message.

File Transfers become visible in conversations too
Another great addition is about incoming and outgoing file transfers that are shown in conversation within instant messages. Information on completed transfers is also instantly shown in conversations.

Empty break lines are removed from messages
The latest version of the messenger client now checks and removes empty strings from the end of messages. This is a useful update that applies to a friendly look of conversations.

Message History dialog fixed issue with invalid symbols shows between selected conversations
Another weird issue was displaying "strange" symbols in Message History if one or multiple items have been selected in the result list. We found out what happened and resolved that error.

OverwrittenAccount option is never ignored even the IM server requires Windows Authentication
Both IM clients support a feature that makes possible to override current account in Windows that would be used by application. That can be done using OverwrittenAccount value under application root in the registry. This tricky option allows to connect to the communication server using different user name but when the IM server requires Windows Authentication then the overwritten account is reverted back to current user ID. The latest versions of the instant messaging clients fix this issue.

Tips & Tricks: How to override current user account to use it in the messenger

We already described in the past a similar situation and advised to use Private login and password as a personal  authentication for a user if he needs to do not use his current logon name in Windows. Read that article at Tips & Tricks: How to get users connected under different IM accounts if they have the same Windows logon name

That solution works fine but sometimes it is required to keep existing authentication and just override user account name. For example, a user can be renamed in Windows but the system is continued using his old logon name everywhere except Welcome screen. And there is no bug because user account must be migrated but not renamed if we want to use a new logon name in Windows and installed applications. There are also many useful and helpful articles on the net that explain that Existing user account names: Don't rename them, migrate them. But anyway, if we only renamed the user how to force the messenger to use his new logon name? That's possible!

Starting from earlier versions both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer support a hidden option in system registry that allows to overwrite current user account that would be used by the IM client. The setting named "OverwrittenAccount" and must be created in application's root under HKCU key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\B Labs\Bopup Messenger]

where "desired-im-account" is the new user name that would override his current name in Windows. This solution works perfectly if Simple authentication is enabled on the communication server and using it a user will be able to continue connect to the IM server smoothly and fast like he logged prior renaming the account.

You can also download the registry file from our website, modify and apply it on users' computers
