Improvement updates of the messenger and observer applications

We released new versions of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer client. Recent updates come with a little improvement of a hidden option called UseSilentMode. The IM client does not show Connection Setup Wizard on startup of the setting is set to UseSilentMode=1. In this case only connection/disconnection balloon messages are shown in System Tray area.

By default UseSilentMode hidden option is equal 0 that means that the instant messenger displays all warnings/errors and automatically brings wizards to a user. This option can be set using setup.ini configuration file during initial setup or upgrade of the software, and also from the server console using IM Client Updates & Branding interface.

New versions of the messenger and observer clients

We released new updates of the in the past few days. These are not major updates because come with a little changes.

The most important change in Bopup Messenger is a new hidden option that allows to do no show group messages sent by a recipient when a personal conversation is opened with him. The option called "HideGroupMessagesInConversation" and can be set on initial setup of the software using Setup.ini file or via Setup.ini Configuration Tool available as a stand-alone tool in Downloads.

Since current version of the IM server software contain an older version of the configuration tool it is impossible to use the new option in the client. The only way is to update the setupcfg.exe file in the installation directory of Bopup Communication Server manually once you download the tool from the website.

Another change is about AM/PM time format that has been added in previous release of the instant messaging clients. The messenger fixes displaying of 12:00 time when 12:00AM shown instead of 12:00PM.

The messenger client also resolves the problem with a scroll bar in conversations. It could appear in a middle of the screen if conversation includes many messages.

Set the amount of displayed messages in IM client conversations

Both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients have been updated. Among a lot of minor improvements and fixes the messenger application added a new hidden option named "MessagesInConversation" that controls the amount of both sent and received messages shown in conversations of sending dialogs. This option can be set during initial installation or upgrade of the IM client through setup.ini file or using Setup.ini Configuration Tool that is a part of the communication server.

By default the messenger shows all incoming and outgoing messages for current session established with the IM server. Using the new option it is now possible to show no messages (except unread) in conversations each time when a new sending dialog is opened. In this case the option must be set to 0 value.

Prevent removing the messenger by users by using new versions of the IM clients

In addition to the IM server both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer have been updated too and versions 6.3.3 and 5.3.3 have been released accordingly. Most important newly added function is a hidden "DisableUninstall" option that was added to [INSTALL] section of the client configuration file. That setting can be controlled via initial setup/version update of the messenger by using Setup.ini file placed near it's MSI package file or can be managed via Setup.ini Configuration Tool from the communication server on distribution client settings.

This option removes Remove button for the messenger application in "Programs and Features" panel ("Add/Remove Programs" in earlier versions of Windows) and blocks it's uninstallation by end-users. That's important if administrator wants to be sure that nothing can do troubles in a proper starting up the instant messaging clients on users' computers.

New version 6.3.3 of Bopup Messenger also fixed the "Use idle away as automated response to incoming personal messages" if this setting is specified in configuration file downloaded from Bopup Communication Server.

The messaging clients also fixed issues with program "hotkey" to call a main window from System Tray or Task Bar areas. Previously it could operate with only Ctrl+Alt keys and without any letter symbol specified in the options.

New version of the IM server added control to disregard messenger configuration for specific user accounts

We released new versions of our instant messaging software a couple days ago. New updates, as always, added useful options and features because we work hard on the software applications and try to hear customers' suggestions and requirements. In this view latest version 4.2.2 of Bopup Communication Server added very useful and important function that allows to do not deliver and not apply IM client configuration file (setup.ini) for a user account if his roles require that.

Yeah, distribution of the client option is a great feature. But sometimes this function interferes in user's permissions and rights if he or she requires to get a full control over messenger options. That was unsupported because options distributed to all users in the IM system. Another problem if the instant messaging system has few users or user groups that connect from different locations. That means that they use different server name or it's address and a single settings file will not work. And that causes problems.

We met suggestions and reports of our customers so now Management Console of Bopup Communication Server includes new option on a user's profile window. It is called "Disregard settings file".

Checking this option disregards delivery of currently uploaded settings file for Bopup Messenger or Bopup Observer clients.

Version 4.2.2 of the communication server also comes with updated Setup.ini Configuration Tool which added option to prevent uninstallation of messenger clients from Programs and Features panel (Add/Remove Programs in older systems).

Tips & Tricks: How to prevent users from uninstallation of IM clients?

Sometimes security policies of a company require to prevent users rights to uninstall instant messenger software from their local PC. Our software already offers an option that prevents users from existing the IM client application. That can be done via "RestrictExitProgram=1" setting in the Setup.ini configuration file and Setup.ini Configuration Tool. Both of them are available for download at But there is no option to disable uninstallation of the application from Programs and Features panel (Add/Remove Programs (ARP) in earlier Windows versions). But that's possible too.

Since setup packages of Bopup IM client software are provided in MSI files then it is possible to use command line options for msiexec launcher by putting standard Windows Installer properties. In order to disable Remove option in the Control Panel "ARPNOREMOVE=1" (in upper case) must be used. Thus the command line that launches the setup package and installs it with no disabled remove option in ARP should be the following:

msiexec /i bopupmes.msi ARPNOREMOVE=1

Bopup Observer client observer.msi package name must be specified instead of bopupmes.msi

There are so many options, and it is even possible to set IM server name by putting "IMSERVER=" property (in upper-case letters) to set a name/address of Bopup Communication Server.

Yes, there is a little problem to use the command line options if the IM client applications are deployed/upgraded via Active Directory Group Policies (GPO). So we plan to add a new option to the setup.ini configuration file to support uninstallation through it.

Major security update for Bopup Communication Server

We released new version of the communication server 4.1.6 which fixes a security issue with creation of user accounts from instant messaging clients. User were able to create any IM accounts and connect to the server even it's option restrict that. This issues appears only if Active Directory (LDAP) integration feature is enabled on the server.

This fix has a high-priority level so we advise our customers to update their existing software as soon as possible.

New versions of the IM client software are also available, and Bopup Messenger 6.1.5 and Bopup Observer 5.1.5 are ready for download. These updates add a support for new hidden option named "DisableRememberMeOption" that can be now found in setup.ini settings file and Setup.ini Configuration Tool. It lets disable "Remember me on this computer" checkbox on the "Log in" tab in the messengers if the client software is used on shared or public computers, for example.

Access the instant messengers from Taskbar on Windows desktop

New versions both of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer client software added a new setting to the Options dialog that allows to show the application in Taskbar. This is a useful addition because it is possible to access and bring the main window of the messenger on the front of Windows desktop if it is already open by clicking it's icon in Taskbar.

The server-side application, Bopup Communication Server, has been also updated. It comes with new version of Setup.ini Configuration Tool that supports then new IM client setting.

The IM client software also improved applying settings that are instantly downloaded from the communication server. Previously downloaded options are now deleted from the messenger if there is no any settings file uploaded on Bopup Communication Server. This function allows to reset current settings in the messengers simply by removing configuration file from Management Console.

The latest version of Bopup Messenger improved a speed of sending messages. No delay occurs in the client if text messages are typed quickly and sent rapidly. Even there is some error with empty message field or selected recipient in the interface shown balloon tooltips do not block and do not freeze any more!

A new great tool to create and edit existing Setup.ini configuration file

We are glad to inform our existing customers and new clients that we have released Setup.ini Configuration Tool that helps to easily and fast create new and edit existing setup.ini file.

As you know our IM client software, both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients can be installed and distributed with a set of pre-existing settings. In order to enable this the setup.ini must be placed into the same directory that contains installation package of the instant messenger. The main issue was that the setup.ini settings file includes a lot of options and it is a little difficult to learn which settings are for and to build a proper file by editing file's entry in a text editor.

To support our users we released Setup.ini Configuration Tool that is now available for download at This handy utility offers to set up all needed and required options via graphic interface that is similar to the Options window of the instant messenger software.

The options property dialog of the configuration tool looks like the Options dialog box in the Bopup Messenger client. So you can set and clear check boxes like you are working in the messenger. The most of the check boxes are 3-state and having checked, unchecked and undefined states. Each from these states applies the following in the end-user IM client software:
  • Checked — the option will be enabled and grayed out in the messenger client, users will not be able to change it
  • Unchecked — the option will be disabled and grayed out in the messenger client, users will not be able to change it
  • Undefined — the setting will not be included to setup.ini file that means that users will be able to change and modify it from the messengers
The configuration tool also provides a Preview function. It allows to quickly see how the settings will look in the instant messenger interface, i.e. which options will be enabled/disabled and which will be available for change to a user. To preview options click Preview button in the options property dialog.

New versions of the instant messenger enhance receiving and notification usability

New major versions of the IM clients have been released today. Bopup Messenger version 5.6.0 and Bopup Observer version 4.4.0 add and improve message receiving performance. The new versions add separate notification settings for receiving personal messages, i.e. messages sent directly to a user, and for receiving group and news messages. This allows to tune the messengers more effectively and handy.

In addition in order to do not overload a single tab of the options dialog box Bopup Messenger adds different tab for the sending options.

SETUP.INI file changes
Since sending and receiving options have been moved to another tabs in Bopup Messenger client the SETUP.INI configuration file has been also changes by a little. Settings from [MESSAGING] tab have been moved to two different sections: to [SENDING] and [RECEIVING].

The new version of Bopup Messenger also moves the "OpenMinimizedSendingDialog" option from [HIDDEN] section of the SETUP.INI file to [RECEIVING] section. It is also available for receiving group/news messages and added as a new "GroupOpenMinimizedSendingDialog" setting too. For more information please download and see comments in the SETUP.INI configuration file So if you use and plan to distribute the new versions of the instant messaging clients via the setup.ini file please update your existing file first.

Improved automatic startup of the messegers on deployment via MSI setup package with setup.ini file

New versions of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer come with a little improvement that offers automatic startup the IM client on user's first logon in Windows. If the and with the help of the setup.ini file which includes the "RunOnStartup=1" setting then the automatic startup of the IM client will be applied to all users on the same computer.

This is important addition which now offers faster and easier start to use the messengers after the (LDAP) catalog.

Known issue: Silent upgrade of the IM clients requires administrative rights

A new issue has been discovered by us. It belongs to the UpgradeUI setting under the [INSTALL] section of the setup.ini configuration file that can be used on clear installations and/or upgrading existing versions of the .

The UpgradeUI option controls the user interface (UI) mode that should be displayed by the Setup Wizard of the IM client on upgrading an existing version via MSI setup package. This option can be used only if a new version of the messenger is distributed from the communication server.

The following values are accepted:
0 — Show dialogs of the Setup Wizard with automated processing of an upgrade.
1 — Display only progress indicator with no any dialogs.
2 — Silent mode with displaying no progress bar and dialogs.

So if the UpgradeUI=2 is used then the MSI setup package is launched with the /quiet command line parameter which requires administrative rights on a client computer! We advise our customers to do not use this value if they are not sure that the installation package of the instant messenger will be launched under a user with administrative rights on computer.

The SETUP.INI is extended to provide more customization in the instant messengers

New versions of the have been released: Bopup Messenger 5.5.9 and Bopup Observer 4.3.23 are available for download. These versions of the IM clients provide support for updated and improved setup.ini configuration which now offers more customization on clear installations and extends managing existing settings on upgrades of the software.

What's new:

Added "ReceivingFolder" option in the setup.ini file to specify a directory for received files
By default, the instant messengers store all received files and documents in user's My Documents folder by creating Bopup Messenger or Bopup Observer (depends on IM client) subdirectory there. Now that folder can be specified through the setup.ini configuration file and set as a "common" option for all users on the same computer.

Added "CreateDateSubfolders" option in the setup.ini file
The newly added option called "CreateDateSubfolders" allows to control creation of subdirectories in the receiving folder called current date. By default, the instant messengers always create new subfolders in the receiving directory to place received data. Now that setting can be set off.

Added functionality to remove installed "common" options on upgrade
Another major addition is an ability to delete existing "common" options in the IM client software on installing new versions (upgrade procedure). "Common" settings could be always overwritten by specifying new values in the setup.ini file during upgrade. Now "common" options can be also removed from the software by specifying "-" (minus sign) as a value of the setting. For more information refer comments and descriptions in the setup.ini configuration file.

No needs to place the setup.ini file with the same options
A great change is added to the MSI package functionality. Now there are no needs to place setup.ini file with the same options each time on installing new versions/upgrades to keep existing "common" settings. If the instant messengers were previously installed with a set of non-changed settings then all new versions can be installed over existing software with no applying the setup.ini file: all previously set settings will be kept unchanged and will not be deleted.

Issues with the SETUP.INI configuration file of the IM client software

New issue has been discovered by us on using the setup.ini configuration file to setup common and predefined settings both in Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer client products. The issue is related to keeping existing common options on upgrading the to a new version.

Current functionality requires that the setup.ini must be used with the same or overwritten values on upgrade via MSI setup package. Otherwise all the common settings in the messenger applied to all users on the computer will be deleted and will be set as allowed to change (inverted from the "grayed out" state).

Currently we think on this issue and will provide a way on how to keep existing common settings in the software even a new setup.ini file is not used on an upgrade. At the same time, of course, we need to implement a way on how to remove currently installed common options. We will keep posted our users and customers on changes we can make, stay updated!
