As always an existing instance of the communication server can be easily upgraded to the new version. New major update of Bopup Communication Server released

Our IM server application has been updated and it's version 5.1.0 has been released. This recent update of Bopup Communication Server comes with many new additions and changes, most of useful and important are described below.

What's new in Bopup Communication Server 5.1.0:

Added localization to Russian language
This release of the communication server added Russian translation including interface of the Setup Wizard, Desktop and Program menu shortcuts and the interface of Management Console. The localization also applied the IM Client Configuration Tool. This is the most useful and important update for our Russian customers and users.

Showing data from Messaging History is speed up
Management Console improved the speed of result list update showing data in Message History views. Prior versions could take a lot of time to refresh that lists if a huge number of messages and transfer have been selected. Now it should work faster and show up to 65,535 records instead of previous 10,000.

Management Console checks and registers IM service module if it is missing
Another annoying and common issue that our customers might face with is a sudden missing of Bopup Communication Server service from Services list. This could appear during Windows update or during a upgrade of the communication server software to a new version. Now the Management Console checks that the service exists in the system and registers it if otherwise.

Saving message logs to text files
The new version activates the option to save shown instant messages and file transfers in the Message History to a text file even no data is currently selected. In this case all shown data will be saved into a file. Otherwise only selected messages and transfers will be saved.

Fixed issues with upgrade previous versions
We noticed that sometimes new version 5.x of the IM server could not update an existing version 4.x correctly and interface of the Management Console started showing bugs like some resources missing. That could appear of the communication server was initially installed to a directory that differs from default location at "\Program Files\Bopup Communication Server\" (or "\Program Files (x86)\Bopup Communication Server\" on 64-bit systems) so some newly added resources of version 5.x still copied to default location. The version 5.1.0 fixed this.

Recent updates of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer

Today we updated our messenger and observer clients and released their new versions. Bopup Messenger has been updated to version 6.8.1 and it comes with the following important fixes and improvements.

What's new:

Settings for receipt of personal and broadcast messages added separate options to show conversation dialogs on a top but in inactive state

The messenger moved "Show window as inactive" check box on "Receiving messages" tab of the Options dialog box to Receiving personal messages section and added same option to Receiving group & News messages.

Receiving messages tab added separate options to show conversation in inactive state

This is because most of our customers do not use "Today's Messages" tab in the main window so option to show it as inactive was unnecessary. Since new and received messages are shown in a conversation dialog so now it is possible to bring it on top on message receipt but keep focus on currently active application.

Fixed switching to Away mode when other users did not see user's updated presence status

We discovered that sometimes users were not update to see others in away even remote messenger reported that it is in the away mode. That was a client bug that we fixed.

Fixed issues with pop up of conversations on receipt of new messages

Another fix is related to showing conversation windows on a top of Desktop. Sometimes this could work, sometime could not.

Useful fix in Bopup Messenger version 6.4.1

We updated the messenger client and it's version 6.4.1 is available for download. This update is for prior version 6.4 that added a lot of improvements and additions. Since we change a format of messages in conversation this version fixes an issue with formatting font and color both of incoming and outgoing messages. If you noticed that first letter of each message in conversation does not apply for required text font and color then it is strongly required to upgrade it to the latest version.

"User is typing message..." event is now supported!

We glad to inform our customers that new versions of Bopup IM suite are now available for download. Both the come with major versions because we did a lot of work, added useful improvements and fixed many issues. See what is new below.

User typing event
Firstly we need to say about very useful function. Maybe it is known from public messenger when users can see in their conversations that another one is currently typing a message or reply. Year, this adds interactivity interactivity and improves usability. When we see that the reply is being typed we do not close chat window immediately. And now our software provides that support too!

Download and update both the server and client parts in order to be able to use this function. The "User is typing message..." event appears every time in a conversation dialog of Bopup Messenger client. Delivery of this instant notification event is controlled on Bopup Communication Server and you can disable it from the Options dialog box by switching to Messaging tab.

Displaying a huge amount of messages on the server history
Management Console of the communication server fixes issues with showing a great number of messages and file transfers selected from a Message History. That issue also related to displaying some profile pages for account, group and/or news messages. Now data is displayed quickly and with no error even you select thousands records.

Fixed installation of the IM server with built-in SQL Server
Another important issue was installation of Bopup Communication Server with it's built-in database server on latest versions of Windows. Sometimes the setup fails to complete because no connection to the SQL Server could be established. That was a security problem because Windows requires a stronger password for built-in 'sa' account for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express that shipped with the IM server package. We did that.

Forget about duplicate versions of the messenger software in Add/Remove Programs panel
Our customers that distribute and deploy new updates of the IM client using the communication server faced with the problem that previous version of the software might not be properly removed from Add/Remove Programs if the update was initiated under non-administrator user account in Windows. That was too old problem that we know about. Now the messenger software removes it's previous version during an upgrade with keeping all settings and message history.

Adding File Transfers to a messenger local history
Both Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer clients fix error with adding and saving received and sent transfers to Message History. Now al file transfers are properly archived for a future review.

The IM server enables the "Hide Organizational Units that are not available to users" option

New version of Bopup Communication Server is available for download. The version 4.1.7 implements the "Hide Organizational Units that are not available to users" on the Contact List tab of the Options dialog. That setting was added in a few releases ago but was not available for change and was grayed out. It enables a rebuild of Organizational Units structure in the user's Contact List shown in the messenger if some of units are not available due to user's Organizational Unit permissions. It can be important and useful to customers that want to hide and to do not show other units to users if they are not available.

The new version also fixes issue with disappearing users in the console if their parent Organizational Unit is moved.

It is easy to upgrade existing version of the server to the new one. Just launch a setup wizard of the new installation package to automatically upgrade the software to the latest version with keeping all application's settings and history.

Great updates of the IM software!

Today is the time to release great updates both of the IM server and messenger software. We released new releases of Bopup Communication Server version 4.1.3, Bopup Messenger 6.1.3 and Bopup Observer 5.1.2

What's new:

Automated rebuild of Contact Lists on the IM server works better and smoothly
The latest version of the communication server improves function of rebuilding users' contacts when some minor or great changes occur in user structure. Now status of Contact Lists are changed in the db even administrator declines immediate rebuild if users are moved to another Organizational Unit, accounts enabled/disabled or permissions have been edited for some OU. This gives a possibility to rebuild contacts manually from the Options dialog when all changes in the console are done.

Update contacts in the messenger on-the-fly
Another great addition in the software is automated delivery of newly built Contact Lists to connected users when the contacts have been manually and automatically re-organized in the Management Console. In this case the server notifies online users and force them to retrieve their Contact List again. Now rebuilt buddy lists are shown in the messenger instantly without it's restart and reconnect.

Send files faster and do not want for a recipient's response
The server adds new option that extends File Transfer functionality. It allows to transmit files and folders immediately on the server first even the recipient is online. Thus the sender has to do not wait while the recipient accepts or declines the transfer because the server receives it instantly. The new option can be found on the File Transfer page of the Options dialog box in the Management Console.

Fixed saving and restoring positions of the messengers on Desktop
Since prior versions of the messenger software added function to show the IM client on the Taskbar some our customers were experience issues with showing messenger windows on user's desktop. The new updates fix those issues that occurred if user closes minimized window from Taskbar.

No invalid text appended on sending graphic "smiles" in messages
Bopup Messenger fixes error when strange symbols appended and displayed on recipient's side after some graphic smiles.

Receive and find received files and documents easily
The latest versions of the messengers add new settings on the File Transfer tab in the Options dialog that allows to create sub-folder to place a received data and includes sender's name. In addition to existing option that create the same subdirectory named current date it is easy now to find files and documents received in the past. By the way, that setting are now moved to user's interface and available on the File Transfer page.

Conversations include group messages too within received private messages
The latest version of Bopup Messenger shows group messages too within personal messages received from selected contact when you open a conversation dialog (sending message window). Group messages sent by that user are marked with green color while personal messages received from him are red and ours messages are always blue.

Access the instant messengers from Taskbar on Windows desktop

New versions both of Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer client software added a new setting to the Options dialog that allows to show the application in Taskbar. This is a useful addition because it is possible to access and bring the main window of the messenger on the front of Windows desktop if it is already open by clicking it's icon in Taskbar.

The server-side application, Bopup Communication Server, has been also updated. It comes with new version of Setup.ini Configuration Tool that supports then new IM client setting.

The IM client software also improved applying settings that are instantly downloaded from the communication server. Previously downloaded options are now deleted from the messenger if there is no any settings file uploaded on Bopup Communication Server. This function allows to reset current settings in the messengers simply by removing configuration file from Management Console.

The latest version of Bopup Messenger improved a speed of sending messages. No delay occurs in the client if text messages are typed quickly and sent rapidly. Even there is some error with empty message field or selected recipient in the interface shown balloon tooltips do not block and do not freeze any more!

The Setup Wizard of the communication server fixes issues with installing product on existing MS SQL Server

New update is available for Bopup Communication Server software. Latest version 4.0.13 fixes issues with installing the communication server on existing Microsoft SQL Server software. The main issue was that the Setup Wizard of Bopup Communication Server could not properly recognize an existing instance of the SQL Server running locally or on remote computer. Even a valid address of the SQL Server was entered. We found that this problem primary depended on a new version of InstallShield software which was changed a few versions ago and now is used to build setup packages of our IM software.

New magor versions of Bopup IM software are now available!

We glad to announce that we released new major updates both of the communication server and instant messaging client software. Bopup Communication Server 4.0, Bopup Messenger 6.0 and Bopup Observer 5.0 are now available on our website at Download Center

The new releases look and work like prior versions of the software. But great improvements and changes are inside: the software is built on a all-new client/server communication protocol which was improved and made more stable and flexible.

Since version 4.0 of the communication server is incompatible with prior versions of the instant messaging clients then existing IM software should be updated in a right way. Please review the How to upgrade prior versions of Bopup Communication Server to version 4.0 and update the IM clients document which explains how to move and migrate to the new versions both of the IM server and messenger software more quick and easy.

Whats new:

Among a huge number of improvements, changes and additions the new version of Bopup Communication Server introduces a new user account type: "Power User" to addition to existing "Administrator" and "User" types. This account type received permissions to send urgent messages and set advanced options for outgoing file transfers like administrators.

See the table below that shows permissions for all available user account types.

Known issue: Silent upgrade of the IM clients requires administrative rights

A new issue has been discovered by us. It belongs to the UpgradeUI setting under the [INSTALL] section of the setup.ini configuration file that can be used on clear installations and/or upgrading existing versions of the .

The UpgradeUI option controls the user interface (UI) mode that should be displayed by the Setup Wizard of the IM client on upgrading an existing version via MSI setup package. This option can be used only if a new version of the messenger is distributed from the communication server.

The following values are accepted:
0 — Show dialogs of the Setup Wizard with automated processing of an upgrade.
1 — Display only progress indicator with no any dialogs.
2 — Silent mode with displaying no progress bar and dialogs.

So if the UpgradeUI=2 is used then the MSI setup package is launched with the /quiet command line parameter which requires administrative rights on a client computer! We advise our customers to do not use this value if they are not sure that the installation package of the instant messenger will be launched under a user with administrative rights on computer.

The SETUP.INI is extended to provide more customization in the instant messengers

New versions of the have been released: Bopup Messenger 5.5.9 and Bopup Observer 4.3.23 are available for download. These versions of the IM clients provide support for updated and improved setup.ini configuration which now offers more customization on clear installations and extends managing existing settings on upgrades of the software.

What's new:

Added "ReceivingFolder" option in the setup.ini file to specify a directory for received files
By default, the instant messengers store all received files and documents in user's My Documents folder by creating Bopup Messenger or Bopup Observer (depends on IM client) subdirectory there. Now that folder can be specified through the setup.ini configuration file and set as a "common" option for all users on the same computer.

Added "CreateDateSubfolders" option in the setup.ini file
The newly added option called "CreateDateSubfolders" allows to control creation of subdirectories in the receiving folder called current date. By default, the instant messengers always create new subfolders in the receiving directory to place received data. Now that setting can be set off.

Added functionality to remove installed "common" options on upgrade
Another major addition is an ability to delete existing "common" options in the IM client software on installing new versions (upgrade procedure). "Common" settings could be always overwritten by specifying new values in the setup.ini file during upgrade. Now "common" options can be also removed from the software by specifying "-" (minus sign) as a value of the setting. For more information refer comments and descriptions in the setup.ini configuration file.

No needs to place the setup.ini file with the same options
A great change is added to the MSI package functionality. Now there are no needs to place setup.ini file with the same options each time on installing new versions/upgrades to keep existing "common" settings. If the instant messengers were previously installed with a set of non-changed settings then all new versions can be installed over existing software with no applying the setup.ini file: all previously set settings will be kept unchanged and will not be deleted.

Issues with the SETUP.INI configuration file of the IM client software

New issue has been discovered by us on using the setup.ini configuration file to setup common and predefined settings both in Bopup Messenger and Bopup Observer client products. The issue is related to keeping existing common options on upgrading the to a new version.

Current functionality requires that the setup.ini must be used with the same or overwritten values on upgrade via MSI setup package. Otherwise all the common settings in the messenger applied to all users on the computer will be deleted and will be set as allowed to change (inverted from the "grayed out" state).

Currently we think on this issue and will provide a way on how to keep existing common settings in the software even a new setup.ini file is not used on an upgrade. At the same time, of course, we need to implement a way on how to remove currently installed common options. We will keep posted our users and customers on changes we can make, stay updated!
